SARUNG STORIES

‘Sarung Stories’ is an interactive workshop led by multidisciplinary artist Abdi Karya from Makassar, South Sulawesi (Indonesia).
This workshop explores the Sarung/Sarong garment as a vessel of cultural significance and storytelling. The workshop will begin with a performance and knowledge sharing session by Abdi Karya, and will move into a guided exchange of storytelling, movement exploration, garment crafting and creativity from participants. Participants will participate in a valuable cultural community exchange, and learn the philosophy behind the Sarung.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own Sarong that may carry their personal story. Sarongs will otherwise be supplied for interactive activities.
Abdi Karya is a multi-disciplinary artist and cultural programmer from Makassar-South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Through his tradition and heritage from Sulawesi as starting point to encounters with voice, objects, and text, he devised performance-based works and installations to explore and investigate collective memories in various social, political, cultural situation within local-global contexts. He has been presented his works and featurings at interdisciplinary forums in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States.
This is an all ages event. Everyone is welcome, and no experience is needed.
